Having a webshop made in 2026 costs a one-time fee for the build, plus monthly costs for the platform, payments and maintenance. A simple shop on Shopify Basic starts at around € 21 per month with yearly billing in 2026. A custom webshop, such as a Magento shop or a Next.js shop, costs more and gets a fixed price upfront from Tieman IT on request.
What does it cost to have a webshop made in 2026?
There are roughly three routes, and the costs vary widely because each route buys you something different.
| Route | What you get | Cost | |---|---|---| | Rented store (Shopify, Squarespace) | A ready-made platform that you set up yourself | Monthly subscription plus transaction fees | | Rented store, set up by an agency | The same platform, but with a custom design and setup | Subscription plus the agency's fee | | Custom webshop | A webshop built around your business that runs on your own server | At Tieman IT on request, with a fixed price upfront |
The big difference is ownership. With a rented store you pay for as long as you use it, and the platform decides what is possible. With a custom webshop you invest more upfront, but you are not tied to somebody else's rules and prices. That is not an automatic advantage: for many starting entrepreneurs, renting is simply the sensible choice.
What does a webshop cost per month?
With a custom webshop, the monthly costs consist mainly of hosting and maintenance: the server your shop runs on, updates, security and backups. Webshops are heavier than ordinary websites, because every visit involves a catalogue, a shopping basket and payments. The monthly costs are therefore higher than for an ordinary site, and I set them per shop, together with the build price.
With a rented store, the monthly amount is the subscription. This is what it looks like in 2026 according to the providers' own pricing pages (indications, they change regularly):
| Platform | Subscription per month, with yearly billing | |---|---| | Shopify Basic | € 21 (€ 28 with monthly billing) | | Shopify Grow | € 59 | | Squarespace Core (no Squarespace transaction fee) | € 18 | | WordPress.com Commerce (WooCommerce) | 45 dollars |

What does a webshop cost via Shopify?
For many entrepreneurs Shopify is a good starting point. The subscription is low, and you can get products online quickly. According to Shopify's pricing page, Basic costs € 21 per month with yearly billing in 2026. There is also a short trial period at a low introductory rate.
The subscription price is not the whole story, though:
- Transaction fees: when paying through Shopify Payments, Shopify charges 1.9% plus € 0.25 per standard card payment on Basic. If you use an external payment provider, Shopify adds 2% on Basic on top of that.
- Apps: for features that are not standard (reviews, advanced filters, integrations) you often pay a monthly amount per app.
- Theme and design: a free theme works, but a shop that looks different from a thousand other shops needs customisation.
A worked example: on a € 50 order paid through Shopify Payments on Basic, € 1.20 goes to transaction fees (1.9% is € 0.95, plus € 0.25). Across hundreds of orders per month, those cents add up. For a full comparison of Shopify with a custom platform, see Shopify versus Magento.
Which webshop costs come on top of the platform?
The platform is only one item. Also count on:
- Payment costs: every payment by iDEAL, credit card or another method costs a percentage or a fixed amount, whichever platform you choose.
- Entering products: a shop with fifty products fills quickly. With thousands of products it is a project of its own, and automation can save a lot of work there.
- Texts and photos: good product photos and unique descriptions sell and rank in Google. If you copy your supplier's text, your shop ends up among a hundred identical shops.
- Shipping and returns: integrations with carriers sometimes cost a subscription or an app.
- Extra work: with me € 95 per hour in blocks of 15 minutes, or a 10-hour credit bundle for € 875.
- VAT: my prices exclude VAT.
When is Shopify enough, and when do you need a custom webshop?
Honestly: Shopify or a site builder is usually better when you are just starting, have a manageable catalogue and do not need to control exactly how things work. You pay little upfront and can always move later.
A custom webshop becomes interesting when:
- your catalogue is large, for example thousands of products with many variants;
- you need integrations with your stock, accounting or supplier that a standard app cannot offer;
- at your turnover, transaction fees and app subscriptions cost more than a custom solution;
- speed is your competitive edge. On a Magento shop with over 3,400 products, the mobile load time (LCP) measured 14 to 16 seconds in the lab in my hands. For real visitors, Google now measures 2.14 seconds.
You can find more about my approach on the page about a custom webshop and the page about Magento.
How do you get an honest price for your webshop?
The price of having a webshop made is hard to compare, because every quote covers something different. A low price can mean that the integrations, the product import or the speed optimisation are missing, and those cost you money later anyway. A high price is not necessarily better if you are paying for features you never use. So always ask:
- Which features are in the price, and which are not?
- What are the monthly costs, and what do they cover?
- Who owns the shop, the code and the customer data if you stop working with me?
- Is this a fixed price, or can it grow?
- What does a change after delivery cost?

Frequently asked questions
What does it cost to have a webshop made?
That depends on the route. A rented store such as Shopify Basic starts at around € 21 per month with yearly billing in 2026, plus transaction fees. A custom webshop gets a fixed price upfront from Tieman IT on request, because the cost depends on your catalogue and integrations.
What does a webshop cost per month?
With a rented store that is the subscription, for example € 21 for Shopify Basic or € 18 for Squarespace Core with yearly billing, plus transaction fees and apps. With a custom webshop it is hosting and maintenance, which I set together with the build price.
What does a webshop via Shopify cost?
The subscription starts at € 21 per month in 2026 for Basic with yearly billing. On top come 1.9% plus € 0.25 per card payment through Shopify Payments, and costs for any apps and a customised design. Always check the current amounts on shopify.com.
Is a custom webshop better than Shopify?
Not always. Shopify is often smarter when you are just starting or have a small catalogue. A custom webshop pays off with large catalogues, special integrations, or when you do not want a platform to earn from every order.
