AI Website Builder or Developer: What Actually Works

Yes, AI can make a website for you, and for a simple first version it works fine. You describe your business and the tool builds a page with text and photos. It gets difficult with findability in Google, a look of your own and long-term maintenance. That is where a site built by a developer who uses AI as a tool is different.
What does an AI website builder do well?
I use AI myself every day when I build sites, so I am not going to run it down. An AI website builder (an online service that generates a complete site from a few questions) is strong in three things.
First, speed at the start. You get something on screen to react to, instead of a blank page. Second, rough first copy: an "about us" page or a service description that you then sharpen yourself. Third, the standard parts: a contact form, a menu, a map to your business.
For a temporary site, an event or an idea you want to test first, that is exactly right. It does not need to be perfect, it needs to exist. The price fits too. At Wix, the AI tools are included in every paid plan according to their own pricing page, and in 2026 the plans ran from roughly 18 to 160 US dollars per month on yearly billing (the price differs per country and can change).
Where does a website made by AI go wrong?
The same problems keep coming back.
Everything looks the same. An AI builder works with a limited set of layouts and writes in an average voice. Put three competitors' sites made this way side by side and you see the same structure, the same sentences, the same stock photos. Your business becomes hard to recognise, while a website exists to show why people should pick you and not the business down the street.
Findability gets neglected. Google rewards pages that answer a concrete question better than the rest. A generated site gives general text about "quality and service". For someone searching "plumber Hengelo emergency" there is nothing useful on it. I also look at the technical side: loading speed, the heading structure, which page targets which search term, and structured data (code that tells Google that something is an opening time or a price). A generator rarely deals with that.
The platform owns the maintenance. Your site usually lives in the provider's system. If you want to move later, you often cannot take everything with you. The price can go up and you are stuck. That is no drama for a trial site, but it is for the site your customers come from. I wrote about this kind of dependency in why your Wix site costs you customers.
Nobody thinks along with you. A tool does not ask why you want a quote form instead of a phone number. A developer does, and that conversation often adds more than the page itself.
Build it with an AI tool or hire a developer?
It depends on what the site has to do. Here is the comparison.
| Situation | AI website builder | Developer using AI | |---|---|---| | Temporary site, event or test | Fits well | Usually too much | | Customers find you through Google | Basics, rarely enough | Fits better | | Your own look and tone of voice | Limited | Fits better | | Webshop with many products | Fits poorly | Fits better | | Links to your accounting or stock | Usually not possible | Possible | | You want to take the site with you later | Often locked in | Own code, you are the owner |
My honest advice: start with an AI tool if you do not yet know what you need, and hand it to a developer as soon as the site has to earn money. A site that already brings in customers is not worth leaving on a template.
How does a developer use AI properly?
This is what it looks like in my work. I use AI for the quick, boring work: a first draft of a component, a test version of a page, checking translations, cleaning up code. That saves me effort and saves you money.
I decide the direction myself. Which page targets which search question, what the site looks like, what goes in your text and what must stay out. AI writes faster than I do, but it does not know what your customer cares about and sometimes invents things that are not true. So I read everything before it goes live.
An example of the combination is an AI pipeline I built for a webshop. It rewrote more than 2,000 product pages in three languages, with a research step, a writing step and a checking step. The machine handles the volume, the check makes sure the text is correct. That is how I use AI on your site too: for the work where volume and speed matter, with a person checking the result. You can read more about that approach in how I rewrote 2,000 product pages with AI.
What does a site cost when a developer uses AI?
You want the price before you start. On the pricing page you can see how I work: a fixed price up front, and extra work afterwards is billed at € 95 per hour in blocks of 15 minutes. That is not an "AI discount", because the time AI saves goes into checking and finishing. What you get is a site that belongs to you.
For a site that fits your business exactly, look at custom websites. If you want to start with an AI feature on your site, such as an assistant that answers questions, that is on the page about AI services.
When is an AI website builder enough?
Sometimes it is simply enough. A small club, a one-off event, a portfolio you maintain yourself and nothing depends on: then an AI builder is a fine choice and you do not need me. I would even rather see you try it first, because then you know what to look out for.
The line is money. As soon as your site has to bring in customers, carry a webshop or make your business stand out, it pays to have someone look at it. Not because AI is bad, but because an average result works for an average business and you would rather be better than average.
Frequently asked questions
Can AI make a complete website for me?
Yes, tools can generate a complete site with text and photos. The result is a good first version. For findability, a look of your own and links to other systems, manual work is usually needed.
What is the difference between an AI website builder and a developer?
An AI website builder makes a standard site inside the provider's system. A developer builds a site that is yours, adapts it to your business and uses AI as a tool. The difference is in control, ownership and custom work.
Does an AI-made website rank well in Google?
It can, but it rarely happens by itself. Google looks at the content, the loading speed and the structure of each page. General generated text usually does not stand out among competitors, so the copy has to be specific to your customers and your region.
Do you use AI yourself when building websites?
Yes, every day. I use it for first drafts, tests, translations and cleaning up code. I make the decisions about layout, copy and technology myself, and I check everything before it goes live.
